It’s rare we get an interview from any of PlayStation’s top brass anymore, so we’re always eager to dig through the comments whenever the likes of group president Jim Ryan open their mouth. Unfortunately, it feels like the PS5 has become a forgotten format of late, as all the executives want to talk about is PC and smartphones. You’d be forgiven for overlooking the fact the firm has a new console to support!
PS Studios boss Hermen Hulst toed a familiar line in his chat with gaming newsletter Axios, focusing predominantly on the platform holder’s push outside of its own ecosystem. There’s not an enormous amount of interesting information in the interview: the cost of Sony’s tentpole titles is rocketing, and adding PC as a platform is helping it to make a return on its investments. Meanwhile, its drive into mobile is still nascent, but it very much wants a piece of the pie.
What of the PS5, then? Well, as we know, it has 12 live service titles in development, as it looks to strengthen its position in the increasingly profitable multiplayer space. Not all of these projects will be new intellectual property, according to Hulst, with projects like Horizon’s rumoured mulitplayer spin-off belonging to existing brands as well. Obviously, we also know The Last of Us is getting a major online iteration, too.
Hulst points out that none of this is going to end the company’s commitment to single player titles, but he failed to elaborate on what we can expect as the PS5 enters its third year on the market. So in summary, another rare interview with a PlayStation executive and very little in the way of a roadmap for its latest console – we’d like to pretend we’re surprised, but this is just par for the course with Sony’s top brass in 2022, isn’t it?
Ports, remasters and everything in between. Wait a minute, this isn’t Nintendo Life?
Meanwhile, Nintendo keeps its games locked to its own console and is swimming in a gorillion Dollars.
As Colin Moriarty said on Sacred Symbols multiple times: We're gonna see a weird PlayStation. And there will be a lot of people that won't like it.
Business talks for business heads. I usually play the games I like and if all these things like service-games, mobile gachas and so on won't affect the quality and quantity of first-party PS5 games6 I'm fine. Otherwise I might switch back to PC/Xbox as my primal gaming device.
We need a new person at the very top.
Been a die-hard Sony fan since the PS1. But yeeeeah, this is what happens when companies get to the top and stagnate. What they need is a fourth console to come out and shake up the market, or for Xbox to rise definitively to the top. Seems like Sony's getting content with sitting on their haunches.
They've had a good year with some very big hitters and the biggest of them all in a couple of weeks.
Everyone has spent years criticising them when they announce titles too early and then have to delay or change what they are aiming for.
Now we don't hear about the titles until they are much nearer completion, people still criticising!
They know they cant win with the fickle entitled web crowd no matter what, why waste time even considering us?
ps5..... for the remakes
I dunno. That State of Play a few weeks ago was pretty solid.
They've shown me more than enough to keep me happy.
Then again I am 39 and I only have so much time between work and sleep.
1-2 major financial Flops should be enough to make them change their mind about focusing on GaaS and Mobile in the future lol. Microsoft failed with this during the X1 and so will Sony.
The GaaS market is already oversaturated with F2P Games
@Golem25 Nintendo Switch has sold less consoles than Sonys PS4/PS5, they get way less 3rd Party Support and barely any new AAA Games...yet their Profits are way higher than SIE every fiscal year haha.
All the talk about the PS5 before it released, ‘we believe in generations and the SSD is so fast it’ll change the way games are designed. I’m not seeing it. I’m seeing cross gen games, remakes/remasters and the same game design that we’ve seen for the last 10+ years.
Like others have said it feels like this gen hasn’t started properly yet, that’s across all next gen consoles.
Sony is going to publish Babylon's fall 2!
@Golem25 Meanwhile, PlayStation has started releasing games outside its own console and is swimming in 2x gorillion Dollars.
Imagine when the PS2 had been out for about 2 years of almost every single game on it was also on PS1. It's a weird generation. Here in with my PS5 playing Star Ocean 5, a game that came out 6 years ago.
@Golem25 lmao never heard gorillion before
All the signs are clearly pointing to a console exit strategy.
Hulst even said in the interview that all PS games will come to PC after "at least a year" from the PS release with the exception to live service games coming day and date. A one year gap is simply worthless, just go day and date and be done with it already.
Time to become a PC bro😎
Just sad how they're ignoring a lot of their main playerbase.
Well, executives looking for ways to make more money. That's basically their job description.
@truerbluer Not entirely, I'd say, after all Sony gets a nice share of all games sold on their platform (30%, if I'm not mistaken).
@dschons fellow Sacred Fan. A man of culture you are
@Nepp67 it definitely feels that way. All these moves seem to not consider the fanbase.
Xbox get praised for bringing their games to more people and more systems, yet playstation plan to do the same and get s**t on?
People need to grow up.

Well that is one negative way to spin this.
This site really needs some anti depressants.
Coincidental timing of this interview coming out after the past weekend!
Unfortunately it's a sign of the times under the current PS Management team...rather than engage with players unlike Shuhei Yoshida, Shawn Layden etc.,online, you'll see them appear to enter P.R. mode with outlets like Axios, Reuters, Gamebiz etc 😕😑
Rather than put resources towards the PS1/PS2 Classics catalogue,(with a good emulation to back it up),or porting PS3 games ala Sly Cooper,Resistance, LBP 1&2,Infamous or even the likes of Rain,ICO etc.,you see them investing in mobile games studios whilst claiming they're still committed to PS Players.🙄
I can live with PC ports if they're successful & help with the PS bottom line...but it's sad to see where looking at the lack of effort & tonal deafness at things like celebrating Sly Cooper's anniversary with no actual port/new game,or the feeble PS Deluxe/Premium PS1/PS2 Classics additions whilst they're talking up smartphone gaming, more live services etc.,& TV shows just seem to illustrate the disconnect PS Gamers who haven't upgraded yet are feeling at present. 🤔
Personally I want Sony to be around for a long time. Sometimes companies need to evolve or they die. As long as they still make great first party games I take no issue with them trying out new things. 2023 is already stacked and I won’t have enough time. Why do you guys insist on everything needing to be for only you?
Have the new ryzen chip with 64gb of ddr5 landing this week. I'll pick up a rtx 4080 when they release then I'll move back to pc. Ps5 is an amazing piece if kit for the price and was great during the gpu shortage, but I don't want to choose between graphics and framerate anymore. This is good news to me
"Just a few games, years down the line."
Meh. PSVR2. That’s all Sony do that I care about anymore.
I'm really not liking the direction PlayStation seem to be heading. I'm not saying it won't be a success but it's just not for me.
Except for PSVR2.
I hope all of these games besides the single player ones fail, and ill spread negativity about them as far as my network goes. I hate the direction Sony has been going in since the top brass has changed. Hopefully there's enough Playstation fans out there that feel the same and we can push back on this. Makes me wish the PS5 gen would just end since it seems to be a trend to change Presidents every gen. I feel like the next one is going to have his hands full with trying to pick the pieces up and save Sony from the brink after Ryan runs off most of the Sony faithful.
Playstation needs someone at the top who is just willing to disregard mindless mass shareholders who only care about live service and mobile. Nintendo, while not perfect at it, knows how it’s done, or at least how to moderate their toxic influence.
I miss the tretton, house days…
Push Square really pushing out trash talking points nowadays.
So, I have a PS5 and a PC... starting to feel like I didn't need both if I'm honest. 🤦♂️
Honestly not even bothered about getting a ps5 anymore their focus on live service & the price increase really killed any interest I had in upgrading lol
@B_Lindz better than having an Xbox and an xbox . oops , i meant “xbox” and a “PC” . It’s still a reason to own a PS despite this , to be honest
Yup, PS5 is my last Playstation.
im all for pc 😂 geez i fix em and consoles
i like console gaming hassel free,i also like tweaking console commands in pc games.but nope no mobile gaming no thank you
As usual, Sony is failing to properly communicate with their audience. Although they're reaching new audiences, so maybe that's who they're interested in.
At this point, I'll probably just get a PC for the next generation ...The PS5 ain't worth it for just Ratchet & Clank and Demon's Souls, both of which will probably also show up on PC eventually. What's left after that? The SSD, sure ...and the convenience ...but you still have to pay to play online ...and you're locked into the ecosystem ...The bad is just starting to outweigh the good now ...At least with Nintendo, you can't play any of their games officially anywhere else.
Seems like its cool to knock sony and the playstation brand all the time now..even pushsquare cant help themselves by publishing articles that have a negative take..you guys publish a lot of good articles but you cant resist putting out useless tosh like this..all it does is bring out ionmagi and his crony squad so they can talk trash again and again ad infinitum...
@itsfoz or an old 1 like Shawn layden 🤔
Sony are starting to sound like Nintendo did a couple of years ago.
What people are seeing is Sony changing, from being consumer friendly, to being greedy. Like Amazon.
@tinCAT-zero sony being greedy? Really? Who would have thought with £70+ pricing for the games...thanks for pointing it out to me..still a pointless article no matter how you try and sell it..
Don't worry mate, I won't talk to you again.
@tinCAT-zero wow a bit of sarcasm and you get upset? If i really offended you then i'll say sorry and remember in the future that you dont do sarcasm..
I love playstation and loved my PS4 but like a few others have said I feel it's now all remasters and remakes. Playstation seems to have lost its way a bit. When the PS4 first came out, I was on it at every free second I had. But with ps5 I fine myself searching for motivation to play anything. Also, being charge £70 for a game isn't great either. I love the exclusive games but there hasn't been many since ps5 released.
I questioned about getting a ps5 at release but I pre-ordered as I want to play Ragnarok. If that wasn't announced I am not sure I would've bothered. Recently, invested in a decent gaming pc so been on that more than ps5. I will have both this gen but next gen, if there is another gen of consoles I don't think I will bother.
Just switch to PC. Sony isn't getting another cent from me as far as I'm concerned. I used to be a fan of PlayStation but not anymore.
And yet PS5 is still the simplest and most cost effective way to play all of Sony's output for the next 5+ years. Which is why I bought their console and skipped a twice per decade PC upgrade.
PC ports are fine with me, but diving into the mobile market is a bad move imo.
